The Story of Lovers Rock
12A
Shining a light on an often forgotten period in British music, social and political history, Shabazz’s debut documentary feature tells the story of an important genre of British reggae that still lives on today. Centred predominantly around female voices, Lovers Rock was the first ‘girl power’ music in the UK at a time of heightened political tension and racial unrest.
Consisting of live performances, comedy and interviews, the film provides an untold portrait of the post-Windrush generation.
The Story of Lovers Rock screening on Sat 25 Oct will be followed by a special lovers rock music night (8pm 'til late) with DJ Fluid Irie at Jamrock Leeds (31 Kirkgate, LS2 7DR).

“You can add The Story of Lovers Rock to the short list of must-see, politically-tinged documentaries which shed light on the cultural roots of a lesser-known musical genre, ala Calypso Dreams and Buena Vista Social Club.”
Kam Williams, AALBC.com
“It's the music that matters, and that is put on the screen with real skill and affection.”
Derek Malcolm, London Evening Standard
