New independent films at LYFF!
Some very exciting new independent family-friendly films are coming to HPPH as part of Leeds Young Film Festival.
Ellie Hales
Leeds Young Film Festival is back at Hyde Park Picture House this Easter, as part of the LYFF Cine-Takeover from Sat 04 – Sun 05 Apr. The Cine-Takeover pairs family films with fun activities, including special guest stars: stuntman Nathan Geering and professional dancer Holly Gibson.
Here are the exciting new independent family-friendly films Ellie recommends:
Finding Optel
Presented in partnership with Cinema Africa! at Hyde Park Picture House, Finding Optel is a hilarious and quirky detective story set in a close-knit community in Cape Town. When the community dog, Optel, goes missing, teen detective Claire sets out on a heartwarming adventure of self-discovery. Set in a community we rarely see represented in family films, Finding Optel is a really special film that had its premiere at the BFI London Film Festival 2025.
Hola Frida!
Ever wondered where famous artists get their creativity from? In Hola Frida!, we get a unique look into the life of a young Frida Kahlo and her naughty dog Chiquita, as she faces her illness and disability with overflowing imagination. Vibrant and sparkling, this whimsical animation shows us how embracing our differences can inspire the world.
Dancing Queen 2 in Hollywood
Dancing Queen was a hit at LYFF 2024, and hip hop dancer Mina is back, this time in Hollywood! After Mina and Markus win a trip to LA to star in a music video, things are a little different to the lives they’re used to in Norway. Dealing with first loves, self-confidence and awkward parents, can Mina deal with the stress of the Hollywood lifestyle and get her big break in a major film? A wonderful sequel to Aurora Gossé’s 2023 debut, but also a brilliant standalone film, Dancing Queen in Hollywood is an energetic comedy that’s sure to be a hit with all young aspiring stars.
Dancing Queen 2 in Hollywood will also be accompanied by dancer Holly Gibson, with a fun and interactive introduction offering a behind-the-scenes look at how TikTok dance trends, music videos and dance films are made.
We’ll also be screening a handpicked selection of short films celebrating dance and movement as part of the LYFF Screendance Shorts, for even more dance-themed family fun.
For lovers of action, join us for the '80s classic The Karate Kid - one of cinema’s greatest underdog stories - and Robin and the Hoods, a modern take on the classic tale in this high-action British adventure. Both screenings will feature a live-action choreography and stunt display from world champion martial artist and action filmmaker Nathan Geering.
