Why watch?
“I really loved My Life as a Courgette, so I had high hopes, and this didn’t disappoint! The stop-motion animation is mesmerising and has incredibly cute scenes with small children and a baby orangutan holding leaves to protect themselves from the rain. But as well as the cuteness, the film delivers important political messages in a way that’s thought-provoking for all ages. The only problem is I want a baby orangutan now.”

Little Amélie or the Character of Rain
Set on the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. One day, at the edge of the immense tropical forest where she lives, 11-year-old Kéria steps in to protect an orphaned baby orangutan. As she takes care of the young ape, her young cousin Selaï takes refuge with them to escape the conflict between his family and the forestry company who are trying to destroy his home.
From then on, the trio fight together against the threat of destruction that weighs on their ancestral forest. At the same time Kéria is given a rare opportunity to discover her Penan roots.

Join us from 10:30 before our Saturday screening for a special activity facilitated by Leeds Friends of the Earth to create your very own Orangutan Mask.
Additionally, our 11:30 screening on Sunday will have a very special introduction from Leeds Friends of the Earth; Savages is based on the real life struggle to protect vital ancient forests and their inhabitants against the growth of palm oil plantations. Simon Bowens from Friends of the Earth will introduce the film and their campaign to secure legislation in the UK to make companies legally responsible for environmental damage and human rights abuses in their supply chains. Simon will also take questions afterwards and will mention possible follow up actions!
Our Sunday morning Hyde & Seek screenings at 11:00 in Screen Two are Autism friendly. These relaxed screenings are intended to provide a safe environment for neurodiverse audiences and anyone who finds standard screenings challenging. They feature prompt start times, raised lighting, reduced volume and a relaxed attitude to noise/moving around. To give audiences extra space, we reduce the capacity at these screenings, so pre-booking is advised as they often sell out.
