Part of Bring Your Own Baby
Ángela’s deafness becomes a point of focus during her pregnancy as both she and her loved ones worry about how this may shape the connection between mother and baby. Post-delivery, Deaf sensitively explores the experiences of both Ángela and Héctor as they try to learn how to function as a newly expanded family, whilst also grappling with a society lacking adequate accommodations for the hearing-impaired.
Through the clever use of sound and silence, the film immerses the audience in Ángela's experience. And, whilst the challenges Ángela faces are a core part of that experience, there’s also a tremendous amount of beauty in Libertad’s sophomore feature and the way it captures the overlapping communities Ángela calls home.
