Hyde Park Pick: Little Amélie or the Character of Rain
This week's Hyde Park Pick is a poetic, delightful new animation Little Amélie or the Character of Rain.
Sylvia Barber
Set in late 1960s Japan, toddler Amélie finds the world a perplexing mystery until her first introduction to chocolate at the age of two-and-a-half, which ignites her wild sense of curiosity about everything!
Just like its strong, unconventional yet inspiring protagonist, this animation defies expectations. The visuals are light, gentle and dreamlike as they float effortlessly between Amélie’s lived experiences alongside her imagination, emotions and memories, resisting straightforward storytelling for something far more evocative.
Amélie’s thirst for knowledge and discovery is very infectious. Everyday objects and simple moments are transformed, allowing us to share the childlike joy of being introduced to the world for the first time.
This film celebrates connection, culture, and nature, following Amélie as she grows and begins to grasp life’s complexities. Like the best animated works, it uses the medium to explore profound themes in a way that feels light, safe and never patronising to younger viewers.
This film truly is the antidote to the fast, loud and bright films we have become accustomed to. We are excited to invite you to try something new!
Little Amélie or the Character of Rain is showing from Fri 13 Feb. You can find times & tickets here.
