Why watch?
“Despite the difficult themes, there is something quite empowering (or perhaps inherently powerful) in Steve. Whilst it is a film about people working and living on a knifes edge, everyone is putting their everything into the fight. And, the phenomenal performances from Cillian Murphy's pained headteacher to Simbi Ajikawo (aka Little Simz) wide eyed young educator, Shola, they're all brought to life with such care and depth it's impossible not to want the best for them all.”

Hyde Park Pick: Steve
Based on Max Porter’s bestselling novel Shy, Steve is the story of a head teacher facing the impending closure of the reform school where he works, told in parallel with the struggle of one of his students (Jay Lycurgo).
Written by Porter himself, Steve is a film which sensitively depicts a day in the world of a micro community of people either fighting for their own well-being, or for the well-being of those in their care. Despite it's 1990s setting, the story of essential services at breaking point and the ripples of precarity feel painfully contemporary.
