Why watch?
“I will discuss RoboCop as a 20th century Frankenstein, exploring the construction of an ideological subject serving capitalist interests.”
Dr. Alain Beauclair,
Associate Professor, MacEwan University
In an effort to stamp out crime in a dystopic, gang-ridden Detroit in near-collapse, the forces in power reconstruct the body of a policeman, killed on duty, within a steel shell and call it RoboCop. Plagued by memories of his death, he hunts down the supervillain responsible.
Showing as part our Philosophy & Film strand, RoboCop has been selected by Dr. Alain Beauclair and will be followed by a short talk from Alain, exploring some of the philosophical themes raised.
Dr. Alain Beauclair is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at MacEwan University. His primary area of specialisation is ethics, with a focus on American philosophy and in particular the work of pragmatist John Dewey. Outside classes in ethics, Alain regularly teaches courses on the philosophy of film, American philosophy, the philosophy of sex and sexuality and bioethics.
Details
“RoboCop looks more than ever like Verhoeven’s masterpiece, a classic of 80s Hollywood and apart from everything else a brilliant commentary on the city of Detroit; hi-tech RoboCop is a harbinger of the decline of the automotive industry and the ruin-porn wasteland to come.”
The Guardian
“Robocop is as tightly worked as a film can be, not a moment or line wasted.”
