Nine Queens
15
Nine Queens is the story of two small-time swindlers, Juan and Marcos, who team up after meeting in a convenience store and become involved in a half million-dollar deal. As the deceptions and duplicity mount, it becomes more and more difficult to figure out who is conning whom. Can two men who have made a living from deception ultimately trust one another?
Reminiscent of the best David Mamet scripts (House of Games, Glengarry Glen Ross, Heist), films also imitate their duplicitous characters by pulling swindles and quadruple-crosses on the audience, first-time director Fabián Bielinsky deftly handles the shifts from tomfoolery to terror in a supremely confident Argentine thriller.
Details
“A deliciously funny and fiendishly clever con-man comedy that begins on a note of ingenuity that it then sustains with the tension of a high-wire act.”
Los Angeles Times
“Fabián Bielinsky’s brilliant grifter classic offers masterclass in double dealing The late Argentinian director served up this tale of squalid fraud 25 years ago, but its questions about greed, cynicism and the human condition remain evergreen”
