Tug of War
18
Set in 1950's colonial-era Zanzibar, Tug of War tells the story of Denge (Gudrun Columbus Mwanyika), a young political revolutionary and Yasmine (Ikhlas Gafur Vora) a young bride on the run from arranged marriage. In this forbidden relationship they are united in their commitment to the revolution for an independent Zanzibar as well as to their love for one another.
Distinguished as one of the few films ever shot on the island of Zanzibar, Tug of War offers an epic portrait of life in 1950's Zanzibar via a coming-of-age political love story set in the final years of British colonial rule.
This film is presented by regular Cinema Africa! partner Maona Art.

“The film, told in Swahili with English subtitles, does well balancing a love and political period drama with a relevant narrative and an elegant aesthetic that portrays Zanzibar as its own main character. ”
Blackfilm
“The suggestive editing is put to excellent effect just like the many symbolic links between Zanzibar and Tanganyika, in peoples, politics, histories and literature, making it a truly African filmic expression. A longing of the heart from this political storyteller of our times.”
