What is Artists’ Moving Image?

To put it simply, artists' moving image is a broad term that refers to moving image work that sits between the realms of visual art and cinema, without belonging to either. It encompasses a wide range of interconnected histories and subcultures, as well as works being created today.

The late artist and curator Ian White once suggested that the metaphor of "a flotilla of vessels, some with rudders, some without, some with oars, and the occasional speedboat, sailing for a long time on a very large ocean" might convey the fluidity and expansiveness of the term "artists' moving image."

What is Pavilion?

Founded in 1983 in the former park pavilion on Woodhouse Moor, Pavilion is one of Leeds' longstanding grassroots arts organisations. Over the last decade, they have worked with several international artists, exhibiting their work locally, nationally, and internationally in a variety of venues, from galleries to unusual spaces such as a disused local television studio and a former Victorian pin factory, as well as in cinemas, festivals, and forgotten spaces.

More recently their focus has shifted towards moving image, and in the coming year, they will setup a practice-led production studio providing support to artists working with moving image in West Yorkshire and beyond.

What if I’m an artist working with moving image?

In partnership with HPPH, Pavilion run the Artist's Moving Image Network (AMIN) – a fortnightly gathering for moving image artists and those interested in the field. The two-hour sessions provide a supportive and informal environment to watch and discuss work from group members and other artists. AMIN offers a mix of in-person (Leeds) and online meetings, with opportunities for public screenings, workshops, and the ability to test your work with the cinema’s facilities.

AMIN is free and open to anyone. If you’re interested in joining, email info@pavilion.org.uk and we’ll send you further information.

What will be shown?

Pavilion Presents brings moving-image works by historical and contemporary artists to the cinema on a regular basis. Expect to see work made locally and internationally, from digital videos to 16mm films, including unique collaborations with guest curators and allies. Pavilion will be on hand to introduce each screening and whenever possible filmmakers and curators will be invited to provide perspectives on their work.
