Journeys with Chloé Zhao
To celebrate the release of Chloé Zhao’s much anticipated Hamnet, we’re excited to bring a couple of her previous films back into our programme this January.
A rodeo star no longer able to ride, a widow who leaves her life behind to drift around the United States in a van, and England’s national poet, William Shakespeare and his bride, Agnes. Three very different characters but each providing a way into ideas about the notion of self, and how one can recover and heal when your world is toppled.
This mini season feels particularly timely right now as the New Year brings about so much focus on the potential for new beginnings. But starting again is not easy, even harder when that process means leaving behind something or someone you have loved.
Zhao’s films can’t answer all of life’s questions but with their beautiful and thoughtful perspective they can be a gentle guide as one tries to find a new path.
As part of this season we’re also pleased to be working with Reclaim the Frame on a special preview screening of Hamnet. This event will be followed by a special tea tasting hosted by Matilya Njau, horticulturalist and creative.
