This week's Hyde Park Pick
HPPH recommends Wolfwalkers as the film you can't miss this week.
Sylvia Barber
As a programmer of films for young people, Wolfwalkers is an absolute gift as it epitomises the idea of a film for ‘all the family’. This glorious visual treat will keep all viewers enthralled, as they are transported to a mythological world via impeccably intricate hand drawn animation, which with every viewing you will discover new intricacies and details, especially with the opportunity to enjoy on the big screen.
It is very obvious how much care and love has gone into this film, alongside Secret of the Kells and Song of the Sea, the predecessors in director Tomm Moore’s ‘Irish Folklore Triology’, which are all connected through their shared style, themes and celebration of Irish culture, mythology and heritage.
As stunning as they are, this film is not just limited to its visuals, and alongside many of my other favourite family films, Wolfwalkers looks at difficult and complicated themes such as loss and grief, through a careful and considerate lens which does not condescend young audiences but instead rewards them with rich and meaningful stories and characters.
Lastly, as a native to Sheffield, I thoroughly enjoy the recognisable voice of Sean Bean – his northern tones a highlight among an impressive voiceover cast.
You can see Wolfwalkers on Saturday 02 and Sunday 03 March, at 11am – with tickets priced as 'Pay What You Can'. More details and tickets available here.
