Films at Heart... at HPPH!
Presenting The Wonder.
Films at Heart is run by a steering group of thirteen volunteers and is part of HEART, a not-for-profit community enterprise and arts centre in the centre of Headingley. The building was originally a primary school and we screen our films in what was the school hall. We have a fixed projector, screen and sound system.
On the second Wednesday of every month we show independent films up to two years old. These are chosen annually by the group and the public at trailer night - a free event, where fifteen trailers are shown and the following year’s films are decided by a vote.
We are delighted to be invited by HPPH to show our regular monthly film in their Screen One on 12th March. We’ve chosen The Wonder directed by Sebastian Lelio and featuring Florence Pugh and Tom Burke. The screening is in collaboration with Des Hurley from Irish Arts Foundation to celebrate Irish History Month.
Martha from HPPH is very happy that we're bringing The Wonder to the cinema and says, 'An excellent choice from HEART! The Wonder is based on a book by Emma Donoghue, one of my favourite authors who wrote the completely absorbing Room, which I read faster than any other book because I NEEDED to know what happened. This story is similarly gripping, unusual and intriguing. Perhaps because Donoghue’s writing is so strong, the director felt the need to draw attention to the source material with a fourth wall framing device which can feel a bit jarring but don’t let this put you off! Otherwise, the film upholds its distinct eerie atmosphere and arresting mystery throughout, with a notably compelling performance from Florence Pugh who arrives in an Irish village determined to uncover the truth behind a young girl surviving on no food but faith.'

Another FaH strand is FilmFeast, where four times a year we choose a film and food to celebrate a specific country. The film is voted for by the group and the meal is made by Heart’s Assembly Bar + Kitchen.
In 2024, we screened films by women directors who aren’t necessarily very well known. This included Hitch-Hiker (1953) directed by Ida Lupino, Persepolis (2008) by Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud and Wuthering Heights (2011) directed by Andrea Arnold.
If you’d like to know what’s coming up we have a monthly newsletter or you can visit the HEART website, Facebook or Instagram.
The Wonder is showing at HPPH on Wed 12 Mar at 18:00. You can book tickets here.
