Hyde Park Pick: Urchin
The impressive feature directorial debut from Harris Dickinson (Beach Rats, Scrapper).
Wendy Cook
The lead in this case isn’t Dickinson (though he does pop up in the film as a minor character) but actor Frank Dillane who plays Mike. Mike is a rough sleeper living on the streets of London, trapped in a cycle of self-destruction as he attempts to turn his life around.
Throughout the film Mike shifts from one opportunity to the next, sometimes dealing with the mistakes of his past but never quite able to face them. Always held back by some parts of his upbringing that caused damage that isn’t easily undone or understood by those trying to know him now or by Mike himself.

If this is the special instinct that Dickinson will bring to his work as director, then I’m really excited for what comes next.

Urchin is showing daily at HPPH from Fri 10 Oct. You can book tickets here.
