Linden Archives

Stuart Linden Rhodes photographed the northern LGBTQ+ scene in the 1990's for Gay Times magazine and Leeds based magazine All Points North. His archive of work has been collected by Manchester Art Gallery and his archive is now housed at The John Rylands Library in Manchester.
Teaching in further education by day and photographing the gay scene by night Stuart used his middle name, Linden, as a nom de plume to protect himself from Thatchers homophobic Section 28 legislation. In 2019, the Covid era, Stuart rediscovered his archive of original 35mm negatives and articles in his attic and in the lockdowns set about scanning and digitising his work which led to the creation of his Instagram account @linden_archives and currently 2 books published by Pariah Press.
For this special event Stuart Linden Rhodes will be presenting a selection of photographs from his archive reflecting on what life was like on the scene, how it grew across the decade and telling the stories behind some of his photographs. The evening will focus on images from the Leeds gay scene from venues and events such as Confetti's, Vague and Queer City as well as bars such as the New Penny and Bridge Inn.
