Nine years after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, a series of grisly murders occur in Miyagi Prefecture, their victims tied up and left to struggle. Strangely, the victims are all municipal officials belonging to the social welfare department.

Prefectural investigator TOMASHINO (ABE Hiroshi) discovers a link between the killings, and a suspect is identified: TONE (SATOH Takeru), who has just been released from prison on a sentence for arson and assault. However, police are unable to find conclusive evidence with which to implicate him when a third murder occurs.

Shortlisted for Japanese Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor.

In the Wake won the Hochi Film Award for Best Picture in 2021 and KIYOHARA Kaya won Best Actress for her role at the Asian Film Festival 2022 in Rome.
