Fast & Furious... In a Day

Making sense of the franchise's early evolution
Tomorrow · 10:00
The Fast & Furious franchise is best known for its epic family drama and gravity-defying action sequences - from parachuting cars out of jet planes to launching them into outer space. But was that always the case?

Part of Hyde Park Film School
Part of Burning Rubber, Crossing Borders

Before it evolved into a series of outrageous spy capers, Fast & Furious actually began life as something very different. The first films in the franchise were mid-budget crime pictures set within the world of underground street racing, and they featured a cast of relative unknowns. This Film School Day will be a crash course in the unusual origins of Fast & Furious.

To help us understand those origins, we'll watch some of the franchise's earliest entries, including Tokyo Drift (2006), Fast Five (2011) and a mystery short film. Through discussion of these films, we'll trace the development of the franchise and explore just what Fast & Furious can tell us about contemporary action cinema.

SCHEDULE:

10am – Introductory talk

10.55am – The Fast & the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006)

12.40pm – Lunch

1.20pm – Next talk

1.40pm – Mystery short film

2.20pm – Fast Five (2011)

4.30pm – Concluding talk

5pm - Break

6pm – The Fast and the Furious (2001)

While the talks are interactive, you’ll be invited to participate at a level that works for you: join friendly group discussions, or just sit back and listen. This is a limited capacity event so please book tickets in advance.

Tickets are £35 and include entry to all talks and films – including our public screening of The Fast and the Furious (2001) the same evening – as well as free hot drinks served throughout the day.

Before The Fast and the Furious, we'll have a special introduction by Mo Ali, Founder of Bradford Modified Club (BMC) about Yorkshire car culture and the significance of Fast & Furious. BMC hosts weekly car events around Bradford to promote car culture and to look at the creativity behind cars. Over the past eight years, BMC car shows have become a vibrant place where communities come together for cars, families and friends.

Part of Burning Rubber, Crossing Borders

Car races and chases have been a key feature of action cinema since the silent era. From The Crowd Roars (1932) to Bullitt (1968), to the present day with franchises like Fast & Furious, audiences have long been drawn to scenes of vehicular mayhem.
