Matthias returns to his parents' Transylvanian village, where there is unrest because a local woman offered two immigrants work in her bakery. Despite no-one else having applied for the jobs, the townspeople come together to express their racist anger. Meanwhile, Matthias’s father is unwell and needs a scan to assess his state – an MRI, in Romanian, the R.M.N. of the film’s title.

Deft, scrupulously humane and entirely gripping film that exposes the nativism and economic resentments tearing at the body politic of one Romanian village, while offering a broader diagnosis of the discontents and dysfunction of Europe as a whole.
