Why watch?
“Palestine 36 is a hugely informative epic film about the three-year Palestinian revolt against British rule in the late 1930s. Seen from a much-needed Palestinian perspective, it throws light on the origins of the rebellion, especially the increasing pressure on land as the Jewish settlements started to expand. If you want to understand what is happening now, both in Gaza and across the West Bank, Palestine 36 gives a real sense of the frustrations and anger that Palestinians were experiencing under the British more than 85 years ago.”
Professor Paul Rogers,
Emeritus Professor of Peace Studies at the University of Bradford
1936- As villages across Mandatory Palestine rise against British colonial rule, Yusuf drifts between his rural home and the restless energy of Jerusalem, longing for a future beyond the growing unrest. But history is relentless. With rising numbers of Jewish immigrants escaping antisemitism in Europe, and the Palestinian population uniting in the largest and longest uprising against Britain’s 30-year dominion, all sides spiral towards inevitable collision in a decisive moment for the British Empire and the future of the entire region.
This screening of Palestine 36 will include a recorded introduction from the film's director, Annemarie Jacir, alongside an in-person introduction from Professor Paul Rogers (Emeritus Professor of Peace Studies at the University of Bradford) to help set the context for the film.
