Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains

Why watch?
“An absolute favourite in the feminist punk film catalogue, Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains still feels electric, mainly due to its fierce screenplay from Nancy Dowd (listed under a male pseudonym). A cutting satire of the punk scene of the 80s and a subversion of the Sex Pistols' story, some of who actually star in the film, it's a blistering look at how the media sexualises young women in music. Despite its trouble production and becoming a box office flop, it still went on to inspire riot grrrl icon Kathleen Hanna and countless other musicians. With a career-launching role for a young Laura Dern (who defied her parents' orders not to star in the film) and some ridiculously catchy songs, it somehow still makes me want to sack everything off, put on some red eyeliner and start a punk band with my friends.”

The media and disaffected teens mistake the acerbic rants of an obnoxious teenage punk rocker as a rallying cry for the women of America, launching her and her talentless group to national stardom.
This screening is curated by Scalarama Leeds, as part of Leeds Cinema Crawl 2026 - The Beat Goes On!
The Leeds Cinema Crawl is a day long event which will feature three film screenings at three venues: Cottage Road, Hyde Park Picture House and Howard Assembly Room.
The theme this year is The Beat Goes On. All the films feature music, rhythm or performance in some form and will be shown consecutively, allowing cinemagoers to travel between each stop, make a detour or two and take part in a few extra activities along the way!
You can buy a multi-venue pass to have access to all three films here. Alternatively you can buy individual tickets for each film.
