Can You Hear Me?

This one-off screening of English Vinglish, which was shortlisted for India's official Oscar submission for Best Foreign Language Film in 2013, follows Shashi Godbole, an Indian woman living in New York who is put down by her family and in everyday life because she cannot speak English.

An English course she attends helps her gain self-esteem by interacting with people from diverse cultures. In the end, she beautifully portrays the strength and determination of a woman who learns a new language and overcomes challenges, showing that it is not necessary to adapt to Western culture at the expense of one’s own customs.

We invite you to watch the film, enjoy some free snacks, take part in a game with prizes and then join us for an interactive audience discussion. We will discuss the language barriers shown in the film, as well as those we experience in our own lives, and have a meaningful conversation about how we can overcome difficulties or encourage people who are experiencing challenges in unfamiliar cultures.
