At 71 years old, the already famous Portuguese writer José Cardoso Pires suffers a stroke, which affects his ability to speak, read and write. Unable to communicate and lost in a realm of “white shadows”, as he later called it, the writer no longer recognises words. We come to know of this adventure because, once recovered, José retold his story in the most unique book entitled De Profundis, Valsa Lenta.
