Subtitling and the cinema

The Reason I Jump
Lia, an irascible retired teacher from Georgia, learns from her young neighbour, Achi, that her transgender niece, Tekla, has crossed the border into Turkey. In search of Tekla, Lia travels to Istanbul with the unpredictable and perennially hungry Achi, where, making an unlikely partnership, they explore the hidden depths of the city.
Premiering in the Panorama strand at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival, Crossing is an engrossing mystery that's as captivating as it is compassionate.
This film was curated by the UK Subtitling Audience Network in collaboration with the HPPH. It will be followed by a discussion with Bengisu Kepsutlu (Univ. of Leeds) and Carol O’Sullivan (Univ of Bristol) chaired by Sara Ramos Pinto (Univ. of Leeds)
Details
“Sweet without being cloying, it’s a love letter to the commonalities between Georgian and Turkish culture; one that encourages empathy and reminds us it’s never too late to change for the better.”
Little White Lies
“Compassionate and original, Crossing is an odd couple road movie about friendship and acceptance of differences that demonstrates rather than preaches its theme.”
