Anam is a professional mourner in Kenya, trained to summon Death and negotiate passage for the dead. But she carries a secret: since her mother died sixteen years ago, she has been unable to feel real grief.

When she is sent to conduct her first solo ritual at the home of a wealthy family, everything goes wrong. Death arrives early, and what should have been a simple negotiation becomes an interrogation.

To survive the night, Anam must uncover the truth about her mother's death and reclaim something she thought was lost forever.
