Why watch?
“My top film of FESPACO 2025, a slow and gentle film celebrating girls and women, mothers and children, and the micro comunities we create to support and give love to one another.”
Mosa Mpetha,
Creative Engagement Officer

Nestled amid the verdant coffee-growing hills of Sidama, a single dwelling becomes the stage for an intimate exploration of the intricate bonds between the women inside. Dorite, the matriarch; her daughter Mulu; Tigu, Dorite’s granddaughter; and Mita, Mulu’s baby, find solace under one roof.
From dawn till dusk, they labor tirelessly - working the land, cooking food, and tending to livestock. While shared laughter, tender care, and freshly brewed coffee knit them closer, the weight of their daily burdens strains their unity. As external pressures encroach upon Dorite's household, their familial harmony faces greater threats.
Divided into four poignant chapters, Amakki delves into the joys, mundanities, and tribulations unique to each stage of womanhood. These snapshots weave together a tapestry of shared experiences, highlighting the complexities of communion amidst adversity. Amakki unveils a timeless essence of motherhood, a simple melody of compassion that transcends the boundaries of age and circumstance.
Our screening on the 14th will be preceded with a live traditional coffee making ceremony in the cafe bar area. Following the film we are thrilled to have director Célia Boussebaa for a Q&A.
As part of our Cinema Africa programme, selected by partner Maona Art. Also belonging to our Tuesday Wonders documentary strand, and season Visible Mending.
Visible Mending normally refers to the process of repairing fabric garments or other items and allowing the repairs to remain visible. In leaving the fixes seen, they end up forming part of the story or character of the item. Our new season of documentaries brings together a collection of films which all document other types of repairs, or healing processes, whether applied to individuals or communities.
