This week's Hyde Park Pick
HPPH recommends The Blue Caftan as the film you can't miss this week.
Wendy Cook
Maryam Touzani’s rich yet gentle drama follows Halim and Mina, a married couple who run a caftan shop in the historic Salé medina. Spending their days producing exquisitely finished hand-sewn pieces, worrying about money and changing tastes, they clearly have a peace with one another, a calm routine that carries them through from one day to the next. One day the arrival of a young apprentice, Youssef, combined with Mina’s ill health prods at that calm.

The Blue Caftan is a film full of unexpected tenderness. More than that though, it pours over with love. The different forms of love between people; romantic, sexual, familial, platonic. It advocates for the value of making space for all these different types of care to sit together and all the joy and peace which can come from that.
Beyond this, we’re also thrilled to be presenting The Blue Caftan in conjunction with Leeds Queer Film Festival which takes place from the 20th to the 24th March across a range of venues. We’ve long admired the work of LQFF whose programming – combined with their commitment to access – make them a true inspiration for us. So, it’s amazing in our reopening year to not just be hosting their opening night screening but for it to be a film which centres love so beautifully, it really is something special.
The Blue Caftan screens on Wednesday 20th March at 8pm. More information about the film, and tickets, are available here.
