My top three book-to-film adaptations

programme news community

Next Chapter Books' Eden Barnes shares her favourites ahead of Pride & Prejudice this Sunday.

The team behind our Guilt-Free Pleasures season is partnering with Next Chapter Books to bring you Pride & Prejudice this Sunday. So, ahead of this screening, we asked Eden – founder of Next Chapter – for her top three book-to-film recommendations.

Eden Barnes

At Next Chapter Books, I’m always chatting with our visitors about what they’ve been reading, watching and enjoying recently (mainly to add to my own TBR list!). Buying Rivals by Jilly Cooper because you’ve seen the Disney series? I love to see it! Picking up The Salt Path because you’ve seen the trailer for the Gillian Anderson adaption? Brilliant! Reading the book and enjoying the film side by side is one of my favourite pastimes. Here’s my top three books with film adaptations that I could read and watch over and over again:

Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)

One of the greatest book and film series of all time (in my opinion!) and a film I’ve enjoyed countless times throughout my university days and 20s, watching with my best friends after all of life’s big moments: break ups, new relationships, milestones and sofa days. Now, I watch it with a more critical lens, but the Mad About the Boy instalment did not disappoint! The perfect watch for Bridget Jones-based nostalgia.

Little Women (2019)

I can never decide if it’s Saoirse Ronan or Timothée Chalamet I love more, but I’ll watch anything with either of them in, and the 2019 version of Little Women is no exception. Watching this film is like having a hug with your gal pals: cosy, cute and emotional. Yes, I know it doesn’t quite do Louise May Alcott’s incredible book justice, but watching Amy, Beth, Jo and Meg come to life is magic.

The Help (2011)

An important film with a star cast, and a fantastic read, The Help tells the courageous tale of black women working as maids in 1960s during the civil writes movement. Beautiful characters, heartbreaking stories and courage weave this film (and book!) into the perfect movie to watch when you need a reminder that any woman can achieve anything she believes in.

Pride and Prejudice is showing at HPPH on Sun 04 May at 15:30 and Wed 07 May at 11:00. You can book tickets here.
