Tiffin returns!
Supplier Interview: That Old Chestnut
Where is the business based?
In my garden just
outside of Leeds in Whitkirk.
How did the business get started?
Back in 2009, a then two team effort, we took our vegan baking to Leeds
Kirkgate Farmer's market. As vegans ourselves we found there was very little on
offer in terms of vegan cake that wasn't from Holland and Barrett and wrapped
in plastic, we wanted to make fresh, simple and uncomplicated cakes that would
be enjoyed by vegans and non vegans alike. After 6 months of the market we took
our cakes to cafes and started the wholesale side of the business.
How did you get your start at the
business?
Do you have any cool new products?
With our custom orders we love to bake seasonally, we've been loving
rhubarb time, pairing this with pistachio and cardamom or vanilla and
orange. Very excited that strawberry season is almost here now!
Do you supply to other cool
places?
We supply a select bunch of lovely people - Leeds Bread Coop off
Meanwood Road, The Plant Collection in Crossgates and two local RSPB nature
reserves, St Aidan's and Fairburn Ings.
Is there a particular artistic or
aesthetic influence on your branding?
We strive to be honest with our
products, reflecting the pure and uncomplicated ingredients which are used to
create them.

Are there any environmental and/or
sustainability practices or initiatives that you’ve implemented, or looking to
implement?
We aim to be super mindful of where our ingredients are sourced,
using local food wholesalers such as Lembas, whom we have supported for the
last 10 years and local farms for sourcing organic fruits and veg such as
Organic Pantry. We support local independent businesses within Leeds Market too
- The Nut Shop we have used for around 13 years! We try our best to avoid palm
oil where possible and as a result all our tiffin biscuits are homemade. We
also supply all our bakes in reusable tupperware to minimise plastic and
throwaway packaging. Our cleaning products are all kind to the environment
too.
Do you remember the first film you
saw at the cinema? (any cinema, not just HPPH)
Oh this is tricky, I
remember seeing Lion King but I believe my first cinema film (had to ask my
twin sister, her memory is far better than mine!) was Beauty and the Beast at
Harrogate cinema!
What’s your first memory of HPPH?
(A film you saw? Did you pass the building going to uni? Did you visit as a
kid?)
My first memories of HPPH are from uni days, I moved to Leeds in 2008
and it was the main cinema we would visit.
Is there a film that you’ve
watched way more times than any other?
This is probably Spirited
Away!
