David Bowie and his films that fell to earth
A new season in partnership with Jumbo Records.
This came about through the development of our relationship with Jumbo Records and a desire to work together more regularly on music themed programming. But it was also because he’s an artist that means a lot to different members of our team, as he does to many and any excuse to put Labyrinth on is a good excuse.
Building a season of films is sometimes easy. The titles fall into place because they’re the obvious choices, the permissions are easy to secure, and things just magically work out. Sometimes it goes the other way, and this was perhaps one of those times.
Right from the get go, what do you include? Where do you start with a man like David Bowie? There are the fiction films, the concert films, the documentaries…that’s all before you get into the films he was influenced by or the filmmakers and other artists he influenced.
It’s an artistic legacy with a lot of different strands and that’s the gift.
So, looking ahead, this January we will be both celebrating Bowie’s 79th birthday and marking ten years since his passing. To do this we’re going to pull a range of some of our favourites into our programme, starting this week with The Snowman, and continuing into January with Labyrinth and The Hunger.
Throughout the year, we intend to keep working on presenting some of the other films he worked on, or was inspired by, which we couldn’t quite make work this month. Instead, we want to let him guide us through this year as a steady friend. So, we hope you enjoy this first offering, but please keep your eyes peeled this year for more Starman-shaped delights.
