“I have impacted each and every person in a different way. Whatever way I have impacted you, remember me that way.”

These are the heart-warming words of the late actress Connie Temweka Gabisile Chiume speaking in 2022 on the MacG podcast, indicating that she wanted people to remember her in the best ways that they knew.

And as the Hyde Park Picture House in collaboration with Women Of The Lens Film Festival CIC begins our retrospective on the development of Black women as superheroes in the film industries, it’s fitting that this programme bears homage and remembers Connie.

Connie was a powerhouse of talent and a beloved icon, both in South Africa and internationally. Most recently celebrated for her roles in the global blockbusters Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Part of the MCU, the Black Panther films had at their core, women in powerful roles – whether they had super human powers or not, of which Connie was a part.

Connie established herself as a versatile and compelling actress. Her journey began not in acting but in education—she trained as a teacher—but her passion for the arts led her to the screen, where she rose to fame with the television series Inkom’ Edla Yodwa.

Her career is a testament to her remarkable range, having starred in numerous South African television productions, including Rhythm City, Zone 14, and Gomora. Over the years, Connie garnered respect and admiration for her unforgettable performances and dedication to her craft.

Connie's talent has not gone unrecognised. In 2000, she won the prestigious NTVA Avanti Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series for her role in Soul City. A true legend, Connie Temweka Gabisile Chiume will forever be celebrated for her contributions to the world of film and television entertainment and we’re proud to pay tribute to her.

Action Women... In a Day is taking place on Saturday 5 October. Find out more & book tickets here.
