The Philadelphia Story & When Harry Met Sally
15
Kicking off our celebrations we have George Cukor's adorable screwball romance The Philadelphia Story (1940).
The film stars the indomitable Katharine Hepburn as glamourous heiress Tracy Lord on the eve of her wedding. Enter stage left is her over-confident ex husband (Cary Grant) and cynical but youthful journalist James Stewart, who has been ordered by his editor to cover the hottest society affair of the season.
Watch out for a simply divinely acted drunken scene between Grant and Stewart. This is a romantic classic for a reason!
Then to really get the party started, we then have When Harry Met Sally (1989). A chance encounter between two graduates culminates in a short-term friendship, but when fate brings them back together five years later, they are forced to deal with how they feel about each other.
Written by the brilliant Nora Ephron, there is of course 'that' scene', but also more poignant segments of actors retelling the stories of real married couples of how they met. Simply divine.
Happy New Year everyone!
