The Wedding Banquet
15
Andrew Ahn’s The Wedding Banquet is an emotional and humour-filled retelling of Ang Lee’s classic queer romantic comedy. Ahn navigates complex emotions with nuance and depicts parenting as an evolving process of the compromises we make for love and the unexpected delight they can bring.
After multiple unsuccessful attempts Lee and Angela are struggling to fund another round of IVF. Their lodgers Chris, who happens to be Angela’s best friend and his boyfriend Min, an art student from a wealthy Korean family are having problems of their own. With mounting pressures from Min’s family who don’t know he’s gay and the looming ex of his visa they contrive a marriage of convenience between Min and Angela, a green-card for Min in exchange for funds for Lee and Angela’s next round of IVF, what could go wrong?
Things soon get complicated when Min’s no-nonsense grandmother arrives to throw a wedding banquet extravaganza for the happy couple, but will they manage to convince her their engagement is real whilst keeping their actual relationships afloat?
