Why watch?
“Cormac McCarthy’s 2006 post-apocalyptic novel of the same name cracked my heart open then left it lying broken on the floor. To use such a beautiful narrative structure to describe the most unbelievably ugly of surroundings, whilst also framing everything around the most sincere love between a parent and a child…it’s just an incredible thing. I love John Hillcoat’s 2009 film for trying to adapt that for the screen. It can feel like an impossible and thankless task to try to reimagine much-loved stories. But, The Road is ultimately a story about love, and hope - and we need these things in an endless supply.”

More cinema of despair this Bleak Week
Academy Award® Nominee Viggo Mortensen leads an all star cast including Guy Pearce, Robert Duvall and Charlize Theron and an incredible debut performance from Kodi Smit-McPhee.
A thrilling and deeply moving tale of survival, an ailing father and his young son journey across a barren, post apocalyptic America in search of the ocean. Respectfully adapted from Cormac McCarthy's hallowed novel, The Road boldly imagines a future in which men are pushed to the worst and the best that they are capable of – a future in which a father and his son are sustained by love.
Philosophy on Film screenings come with an introduction, and post film philosophical analysis. This event will be hosted by philosopher Joe Saunders.
Bleak Week: Cinema of Despair is presented in partnership with the American Cinematheque and Prince Charles Cinema.
