The Lost Okoroshi
15 TBC
Haunted by dreams of an ancestral Okoroshi masquerade, a disillusioned security guard begins to receive messages from the traditional Igbo spirit. One morning, he wakes up to find himself transformed into a mute purple spirit, fated to embark on a spiritual journey through the sprawling city of Lagos.
Filmmaker Abba Makama's brilliant surrealist romp debunks Western-influenced misconceptions of traditional masquerades, presenting ancestral spirits as superheroes who shouldn’t be feared but venerated and in fact welcomed, as they are spirits of the ancestors (the Igbo word for Masquerade, Mmanwu, loosely translates to spirit of the dead/ancestor) who bear good fortune.
We're also extremely pleased to host an extended introduction about West African Masquerades by Emily Zobel Marshall, Professor in Postcolonial Literature at the University of Leeds.
