Roberto Rossellini's World War Two Nazi occupation and resistance drama is considered one of the pivotal works of Italian neorealism.
Drama • Critically Acclaimed • Gripping
A landmark of Italian neorealism approaching its 80th anniversary, Roberto Rossellini’s drama about the Nazi occupation of Rome is as powerful now as it must have been on it's release in 1945. Aldo Fabrizi is a priest who is helping partisans escape the gestapo within the besieged city and Anna Magnani is effervescent as the fiancée of a resistance member. Created and filmed amid the ruins of Rome just after it had been liberated the film blends tense drama with a naturalistic, documentary style which was highly influential in the cinema to follow.
