Oluwale's Story and our Crossroads Communities (Schools Event)
Students will watch a short film exploring the life and legacy of David Oluwale before considering the wider historical and social context of his story. Facilitated discussion will explore themes including migration, racism, homelessness, mental health, justice and belonging, encouraging young people to reflect on the crossroads faced by David, by Leeds, and by society today.
Students will then take part in guided creative writing activities, developing their own responses to these themes before sharing or performing their work in a supportive environment. The workshop aims to build confidence, creativity and critical thinking while encouraging students to consider the positive role they can play in shaping more inclusive communities.
This event is part of the David Oluwale and the City at the Crossroads series, organised by the David Oluwale Memorial Association as part of Being Human Festival. Being Human Festival is the UK’s national festival of the humanities, taking place 5-14 November 2026. Led by the School of Advanced Study, University of London, in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy.
