Mutiny in Heaven
18
Narrated exclusively by the original band members, Mutiny in Heaven delves deep into the psyche of The Birthday Party, chronicling how Nick Cave and his school friends startled audiences with their confrontational performances, primal screams, outlaw gothic horror, and anarchic lifestyle.
A thrilling tale of struggle, artistic genius and total dysfunctionality, the film is told in the group’s own words, bringing the band’s story to the screen for the first time. It is a twisted tale of ascent, realisation and implosion whilst dealing with issues of artistic muse, creativity, addiction, fame, interpersonal conflict and the unique relationship between creative vision and self-destruction - all underpinned by the dark, wry humour of the individual band members.
Utilising exclusive candid interviews, a wealth of rare and unseen archives, original artwork, unreleased tracks, studio footage, animation and multimedia content - the film is as visually rich as it is narratively riveting - a revealing look back at its key members’ origins, dreams, hopes and motivations.

“Fans of the legendary post-punk band the Birthday Party will take to Ian White’s new film like pigs to slop, relishing the debaucherous badassery of its subjects and their drug-addled journey to greatness.”
Luke Buckmaster, The Guardian
“A dark, depraved, and inspirationally dazzling tribute to Nick Cave and the Birthday Party.”
Mike Usinger, The Georgia Straight
“As you watch the documentary (even for those of us who followed them), the story of The Birthday Party will make you sweat as if you’re watching the new Saw movie—you know that everyone’s going to die gruesomely, but you simply can’t refrain from feeling the pulse of the bloodletting despite knowing the post-credit denouement—that Harvey, Calvert, and Cave made it out alive.”
