By anyone's standards, the Hoover's are a family of characters including Richard (Greg Kinnear), a motivational speaker whose career in in decline and his wife Sheryl (Toni Collette), who's losing patience with both his crisis and their marriage. 

When seven year old Olive (Abigail Breslin) sets her sights on winning the Little Miss Sunshine pageant aided by Alan Arkin's magnificent Granpa, the family hops into a VW bus with the aim of fulfilling her dreams.
