Licorice Pizza
15
Why watch?
“At the heart of Liquorice Pizza is the sun-dappled, innocent and spontaneous relationship of Alana Kane and Gary Valentine. For all the praise critics had for Liquorice Pizza, one complaint dogs its Letterboxd reviews: Kane is 25 and Valentine is 15. To what extent are we justified in being put off by this? Is there a place for the moral ickiness we feel at the age gap in our criticism of the film? Is the film worse for the way it presents their relationship?”
Dr. Colette Olive,
Teaching Fellow in Philosophy, University of Leeds
With this follow-up to Phantom Thread, Paul Thomas Anderson proves himself amongst the most versatile directors in contemporary American cinema. The film follows Alana Kane and Gary Valentine as they grow up, run around and fall in love in the San Fernando Valley, 1973.
Licorice Pizza has been selected by Dr. Colette Olive as part of our Philosophy & Film strand – and will be followed by a short talk from Colette exploring philosophical themes raised.
Unfortunately, despite best endeavours we can no longer show this on 35mm film as we weren't able to secure the print, so we'll be screening the film digitally instead.

“Anderson has harnessed all the thrilling, muscular techniques that are his directing trademarks as well as his affection for high drama as a writer and applied them to telling a story that’s surprisingly sweet.”
