Why watch?
“Genius is a strong word, but it’s an appropriate one for Imran Perretta, the director and co-writer of Ish. Of course, a film as breathtaking as this is a truly collaborative one, thanks to the work and commitment of so many talented people, even fuelled by the generosity of locals who fed the crew Lamb Biryani when they were filming. However, Perretta, in particular, has put so much into the film, drawing on his own childhood experiences and the beautiful relationships that glow especially brightly amid dark struggles with police injustice, grief, and the film's black-and-white palette. As well as directing and co-writing, Perretta also composed the film's soul-stirring score.”

Hyde Park Pick: Ish
12-year-old best friends living in Luton, Ish and Maram (played by non-professional actors Farhan Hasnat and Yahya Kitana, themselves friends since childhood) are trying to enjoy their summer, but after an upsetting police stop and search, struggle to retain their friendship. As the ripples take hold, the boys try to make sense of the men they are becoming – and how ‘letting go’ can be the hardest part of growing up.
A deft, compassionate portrait of contemporary British childhood that recalls the work of Shane Meadows in its clear-eyed lyricism, Ish examines the aching experience of being forced to grow up too soon by a society that views you with suspicion and hostility.
The preview screening on SUN 26 JUL will be followed by a live Q&A with director Imran Perretta and producer Dhiraj Mahey. The discussion will be hosted by Leeds based sculptor and filmmaker, Karanjit Panesar.
