Why watch?
“Fremont is an understated exploration of fortune, love and trauma told through the lens of an Afghan refugee. Anaita Wali Zada's quiet performance is excellent; the film says so much with such a sparse script. Donya’s job as a fortune cookie writer captures the imagination and works perfectly to convey the film’s message.”

Donya, a young Afghan who moved to Fremont, California after serving as a translator for the American army, spends her days working at a fortune cookie factory and her nights wide awake battling between her desire to rebuild her life and the overbearing guilt she carries within. In a bid to reconnect with the world, she sends an unconventional message through a fortune cookie.
Tinged with deadpan humour, and similar in style and tone to Jim Jarmusch, Babak Jalali's assured black-and-white indie drama is aided by Anaita Wali Zada's calm and poignant presence.
