American football star Flash Gordon and Dale Arden are kidnapped by Dr Hans Zarkov and blast off into space to investigate strange galactic goings on. What they don't expect to stumble into are wonderful, strange and dangerously camp new worlds, tyrannically ruled over from the planet Mongo by ruthless Ming the Merciless. Can Flash save the day and lead the warring factions to victory?

The original comic strip created by Alex Raymond and serial films, both from 1930s, are brought gloriously to life in a riot of colour and chaos. Together with the operatic histrionics of the brilliant Queen soundtrack, the film is led by a perfectly cast Max von Sydow as Ming and is stuffed to the asteroids with stars, (sometimes) doing their best to play it straight: Brian Blessed, Melody Anderson, Timothy Dalton, Topol, Peter Duncan, Richard O'Brien, Deep Roy and likely best of all, Peter Wyngarde as General Klytus. "No! Not the bore worms!".
