Dìdi
15
Dìdi follows 13-year-old Chris, aka Wang Wang (Izaac Wang), as he navigates the treacherous waters of teenage life, from awkward dating and precarious friendships to the extreme joy of discovering a true passion (in this case, skate filming).
Wang deftly employs timeless coming-of-age tropes, exposing the embarrassing and hilarious moments that define this pivotal stage. However, it's Chris’s struggle with his identity as an Asian American that make Dìdi something extra special. Joan Chen and Shirley Chen deliver nuanced performances as Chris’s mother and sister, respectively, adding depth and a tremendous amount of heart to the family dynamics.
Details
“Both the filmmaker and his cast are breakouts to watch in this Sundance standout, a heartfelt and hilarious entry in the coming-of-age canon that’s primed to find kindred souls in a wider audience.”
Jen Yamato, Los Angeles Times
“The film is a very solid entry in the annals of coming-of-age films, reminiscent of Bo Burnham’s 'Eighth Grade' in both its affection for its young characters and its willingness to meet them on their own terms. But its real secret weapon turns out to be the equal empathy it extends toward Chungsing, whose own journey emerges as a moving complement to her son’s.”
