Darling
15
Diana Scott is an ambitious model determined to make it to the top of the London fashion and movie scene. She takes any opportunity to bend her ambitions to take advantage of whatever (or whoever) the moment offers her, but is she able to find what she ultimately craves, freedom, love and belonging.
Winner of four BAFTAs and three Oscars, including Best Actress for Julie Christie, Darling is beautifully shot by John Schlesinger, who two years earlier had directed Billy Liar (also starring Julie Christie), and can almost be seen as a continuation of Julie's journey from North to South and cemented Schlesinger's reputation. It's a bold romantic satire of a very specific time in Britain and a reminder that the decade’s supposed freedom and liberation (particularly for women) was anything but.
