Lang (Eddie Peng - The Great Wall) returns to his hometown on the outskirts of the Gobi Desert, where packs of abandoned dogs run wild. Lang was a local celebrity prior to his imprisonment, and whilst he is welcomed by many, he also tries to avoid the intentions of local gangster Butcher Hu, who is looking for revenge on Lang for his role in his nephew's death.

Lang decides to seek the bounty placed on a wild dog as part of a programme to remove unwanted animals in preparation for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, but he forms a surprising bond with the feral creature.
