Why watch?
“In this talk I want to invite you to close your eyes, pinch your nose, and palpate the dripping, pulsing morass of Ridley Scott’s Alien with me. This phenomenological meditation will turn us inside out, illuminating and expanding upon Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s ontology of the Flesh. I will describe how the experience of body horror exposes an ongoing existential ordeal, confounding questions of individuality and revealing a profoundly ambiguous sense of selfhood. We will thus find ourselves excised from the mythic sanctuary of private subjectivity, provoking an unsettling sense of bodily vulnerability churning deep in our guts.”

Responding to an unknown emergency broadcast, the crew of the Nostromo investigate a desolate planet. But to their horror, and ours, they bring something else back on board with them. Something predatory, terrifying and brutal. But the creature is not the only danger that lurks in the darkness of their ship.
Showing as part our Philosophy & Film strand, Alien has been selected by Dr. Jordan Adshead and will be followed by a short talk from Jordan, exploring some of the philosophical themes raised.
